Every February we get the same calls: a burst hose bib, a ceiling stain under an ice dam, a heat bill that doubled. Almost all of them trace back to something that takes twenty minutes in October. Here's the checklist we run on our own homes — and on our customers' homes as a one-visit winterization service.
The single most expensive skip on this list. A hose left attached traps water in the faucet, the first hard freeze expands it, and the pipe splits inside your wall — you find out in spring when the wall is wet. Disconnect hoses, shut the interior valve if you have one, and drain the bib.
Clogged gutters anchor ice dams and dump meltwater next to your foundation. Clean them in late fall after the oaks finish, not early October when they'll just refill. Downspouts should carry water several feet from the house. (Full detail in our ice dam guide.)
Walk the house on a windy day with the back of your hand near window edges, door sweeps, and outlets on exterior walls. Cracked caulk and flattened weatherstripping are cheap fixes that pay for themselves in one heating season — and they're a core part of our window sealing work.
Fresh filter in, supply vents unblocked, and ceiling fans reversed to clockwise so they push warm air back down. Free comfort.
Attic hatches, recessed lights, and bath fans leak warm air into the attic — which is exactly what melts roof snow into ice dams. Weatherstrip the hatch, and if your bath fan vents into the attic instead of outside, fix that before winter, not after the mold.
Swap screens for storm panels, seat storm windows, and adjust door thresholds so exterior doors actually compress their weatherstripping.
