Get three painting quotes and you might see three very different numbers — which makes the whole thing feel arbitrary, like the painters are just picking their favorite number. It isn't arbitrary. Nearly every interior painting quote comes down to four factors, and once you understand them, you can predict your own price range and spend your budget where it shows.
Wall square footage sets the base, but the kind of surface matters more than people expect. Open walls roll fast — satisfying, movie-montage fast. Ceilings are slower (overhead work, drips, usually a different paint). Trim, doors, and baseboards are the slowest of all — detail brushwork, multiple coats, light-catching surfaces that show every lazy stroke. A room with crown molding, six-panel doors, and a chair rail is a very different job than the same room with bare walls, even at identical square footage. When a quote seems high for a “small room,” count the linear feet of trim before you judge it.
This is the factor cheap quotes skip — and it's where paint jobs succeed or fail. Nail pops, settlement cracks, old anchor holes, glossy surfaces that need scuffing, stains that need blocking primer: all of it has to happen before color, or the new paint just highlights the old problems in a fresh, more expensive way. Our crew's drywall background is exactly why our finished walls look flat and flawless — the repair and the paint come from the same hands. When you compare quotes, ask specifically what prep is included. A low bid that skips prep isn't cheaper; it's unfinished.
Painting light beige over lighter beige? Fast. Covering a dark navy accent wall with white — or going the other way — can take a tinted primer plus two finish coats. Dramatic color changes are absolutely worth it (they're the biggest visual payoff in painting), just know they carry a coat or two of extra labor. The paint store's little sample card does not mention this. We do.
Paint lines range from budget to premium, and the honest answer is that the premium stuff earns its price in some rooms and not others. Kitchens, bathrooms, kids' rooms, and trim benefit from scrubbable, moisture-tolerant premium paint — anywhere fingerprints, steam, or “art” happen. A low-traffic adult bedroom does fine with mid-grade. We'll tell you where each makes sense rather than defaulting to the expensive can everywhere.
Usually two finish coats for a uniform sheen — one-coat promises are mostly marketing. Add a primer coat for dramatic color changes, stain blocking, or raw patched drywall. Anyone quoting one coat over patches is planning for you to not look closely.
We move and cover what's practical — but the more the room is cleared, the faster the job goes, and faster is cheaper. Emptying the small stuff before we arrive is the easiest money you'll ever save.
Flat or matte hides wall imperfections; satin and eggshell wipe clean; semi-gloss is for trim, doors, and moisture zones. The shinier the paint, the more it tattles on the wall underneath — which is another reason prep matters.
Paint is dry to the touch in hours but cures for days. Give walls a gentle week before scrubbing or leaning furniture against them — patience here protects the finish you just paid for.
